COMPLETED FIRST CAMP AT SCHOOL AND HAS RETURNING VARSITY AND JV PLAYERS COMPETING AT COLLEGES AND IN LEAGUES
Dave Boff has a season under his belt as the Roselle Catholic boys’ basketball coach.
Now he has had the pleasure of running the All-County Basketball Camp at Roselle Catholic along with girls’ coach Joe Skrec. The 26th edition - and the first one without longtime and successful boys’ coach Pat Hagan - came to a conclusion last week at the Roselle school. Boff was more than pleased with the two weeks of instruction that he was a part of for the first time. “The camp went well,” said Boff, who guided the Lions to an 11-14 record in the 2007-2008 season. “Over the two weeks we had 90 kids attend.” Boff had success as the girls’ coach at Governor Livingston before succeeding Hagan, who was at the helm for more than 25 seasons. “The main goal of the camp is to teach the fundamentals, while still having some fun,” Boff said. “I think we accomplished that.” Boff also took returning varsity and junior varsity teams to Rider University the last weekend in June to participate in team competitions over a three-day span. “Our varsity team went 3-3 in a pretty competitive league,” Boff said. “It was better than last year when the team won only one game. A lot of our kids played well.” The varsity defeated Old Forge, Pa. and Central Bucks South, Pa. among its three wins. Seniors to be include Ryan Sullivan, Michael Skrec, Conner Laverty, Tim Henn, Carl Aime and Frantzdy Romain.
Juniors to be include Brian Petruzelli, Rich Ferreria, Eddie Tomasso, Steve Morgan, Gjon Vukedjia, Steve Patricco and Daryll Sessoms.
The JV team went 7-1, winning all four games in pool play before winning three more playoff contests. The squad fell in the championship game to North Hunterdon 47-46.
Wins came against Mendham, Central Bucks West, Pa. and Flemington.
The juniors to be that competed on the varsity also played JV, in addition to incoming freshmen Jameel Warney and Dominic Gonzalez.
"I was really pleased with the JV play and excited about the incoming freshmen as well," Boff said.
Boff's players are now competing for the first time in the Elizabeth Summer League at the Dunn Sport Center and Edison House. Boff's team was 4-2 as of Tuesday in a league that competes on Monday and Wednesday evenings.
The league, run by Elizabeth coach Chris Balent, lasts until the end of July. Balent just completed his first season at the helm of the Minutemen after a successful stint at South Brunswick.
NOTES: Two of Boff’s graduated seniors - both three-year varsity performers at RC - will continue in college.
Matt Henn, who finished his varsity career with 984 points, will play at Division 3 Stevens Tech in Hoboken. Brendan Trelease, a point guard who hit a game-winning half-court shot to beat GL last winter, will play at Division 3 Gettysburg College in Gettysburg, Pa. Henn and Trelease served as co-captains for the Lions during Boff’s first year at the helm. Henn scored a game-high 24 points in Roselle Catholic’s 83-53 home and season-finale victory over Johnson. Trelease added 10 points. The Lions finished 11-14 after winning four straight and five of their last six.
